Lake Vinuela is named after the small Andalucian white village of Vinuela close to the point where the rivers Velez, Guaro and Seco were dammed to create this spectacular lake/reservoir.
The capacity is 170,000,000 cubic metres of water.
It is possible to drive almost - but not quite the entire circumference and there are some delightful picnic areas one or two with barbecues. The barbecue area which is sited behind the Hotel Vinuela also has a water supply.
Prior to the construction of the dam, the area was found to contain many treasures from Roman times, these were thoroughly excavated and some rare items can be viewed in the Museum at Malaga.
As you circumnavigate the lake you will pass a number of delightful villages including Canillas de Aceituno, Alcaucin, Periana, Riogordo. Close by the villages of Comares, Competa and Benamargosa are charming and should also not be missed.
The lake is 15 minutes inland from the Coastal town of Torre del Mar on the Eastern Costa del Sol. It is well stocked with fish and in particular, Carp. A licence to fish is necessary but is easily and inexpensively obtained. Swimming and non motorized water sports are permitted.
There is a good supply of self catering accommodation nestling in the hills overlooking the lake and in the various towns and villages close by. There are many sporting activities including Horse riding, Golf, Hang Gliding and Walking Tours on offer. In the main these activities are offered by enterprising Brit's and other North European Nationals who have come to settle in the area and in pursuit of the sun.
Whilst the area maintains a high degree of the real Spain it has also taken on, in a small way, something of an international flavour. You will find estate agents here that are very professional and able to look after you in many different languages and banks, doctors, lawyers, dentists equal to those in the UK or any part of Europe. This has helped to make the area a first choice for many wishing to live away from the colder climate of Northern Europe. Medical care is excellent. English, German and French daily newspapers are in the newsagents at Velez Malaga each morning before 10am.
At the moment there are two golf courses close at hand, Baviera and Anoreta, both welcome visiting golfers and equipment can be hired. Reported in the Costa del Sol news recently - 8 further golf courses are planned for the area.
Horse riding in the hills and on the coast is a must if you enjoy this activity, hard hats are generally supplied but bring good strong shoes.
You are sure to enjoy the wide range of good quality restaurants available in the villages or down at the coast in Torre del Mar, Caleta de Velez and 10 minutes further on to Torrox and Nerja.
Restaurants range from the most simple to the most expensive, they include Indian, Chinese, Thai, French, plus of course a wide choice of Spanish restaurants anxious to display their culinary talents. Restaurant prices are very low in this part of Spain when compared with the cities of Northern Europe but the standard is generally good.
